'Sum and Substance' is one of the regal giants of the hosta world. Large, deeply veined and puckered, chartreuse-yellow leaves form imposing mounds 30in. high that glow warmly in dappled light. (In dense shade, the leaves turn green.) Lavender flowers appear just above the leaves in late summer. Slugs, the only significant pest of hostas, generally leave this cultivar alone. No shade garden is complete without the bold, distinctive foliage and elegant floral spikes of hostas. These treasures come in silvery blue, yellow-green, rich green, and all shades in between, as well as every manner of variegation and all sizes from giant wonders to diminutive pearls.
